Nursing in the intensive care unit (ICU) is inherently demanding, requiring high levels of vigilance, critical thinking, and rapid decision-making to ensure patient survival. ICU nurses often experience significant stress due to high workloads, emotional strain, and the pressure of handling critically ill patients (Martins & Ojo, 2023). Chronic occupational stress can lead to burnout, decreased job performance, and compromised patient care (Adamu et al., 2024).
At Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), ICU nurses may face multiple stressors, including long working hours, nurse shortages, and the emotional burden of dealing with critically ill or dying patients. Without adequate stress management strategies, prolonged exposure to high-stress environments can negatively affect nurses’ physical and mental health, potentially leading to job dissatisfaction and attrition (Ibrahim & John, 2024).
This study aims to evaluate the stress levels among ICU nurses in BSUTH, identifying the key stressors and their impact on job performance and patient care. The findings will provide recommendations for improving working conditions and mental health support for ICU nurses.
High stress levels among ICU nurses have been linked to reduced efficiency, increased medical errors, and poor patient outcomes (Oladimeji & Sani, 2023). In BSUTH, ICU nurses work in a challenging environment where they must balance multiple patient care responsibilities while managing their emotional and psychological well-being. Despite these challenges, there is limited research on the extent of stress experienced by ICU nurses in BSUTH and its impact on patient care.
This study seeks to evaluate the levels of stress among ICU nurses, identify major stressors, and assess how stress affects job performance and patient safety. Understanding these factors will help in developing effective stress management interventions to improve nursing practice and overall healthcare outcomes.
This study will focus on ICU nurses in BSUTH, evaluating their stress levels and identifying major stressors. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported stress levels and the difficulty in establishing causality between stress and patient outcomes.
